如果你還不認識這兩隻全世界最感心的阿貓阿狗…

我曾經收過一本書，來自一個朋友。

她是那種總想著要讓朋友不虞匱乏，常常超出了自己能力的去給予身邊朋友所需一切的那種人。於是我們總說「啊！妳給的我們好重。」於是她就會像個受了創傷的孩子覺得全世界都不懂她，覺得她給的一切都不值得了！

那個應該是皆大歡喜的場面總是變得尷尬萬分，而那個禮物就像全天底下最無辜的犧牲者，要是能說得出話肯定會吆呼一聲冤枉啊！直到某天她喜孜孜怯生生的遞給我這本書—「沒有東西」送給你

我翻看著書，跟著奇奇那股傻勁找禮物直到最後一頁…心頭也跟著暖呼呼的！迫不及待的從頭翻看。太愛這份禮物了，簡直是量身為她打造的(而不是為我這個受贈者)。McDonnell筆觸極為簡單，敘事結構卸除多餘的線條，就說那麼一件事情，奇奇根本就像我這位努力要給予朋友，至今想起書裡那極簡又生動的一頁頁故事，嘴角都還是上揚著。對話背後藏著的是巨大的哲思，原來這就是繪本的力量啊！好威、厲害！

是我在中山店整理書架時瞥見封面，這不是那隻熟悉的小東西嘛！忍不住放下手邊的事趕緊打開來看看！

同樣極致簡單的敘事，這次它的路途更遠了些，奇奇這次要帶著哭泣的小鳥旅行…這次的故事有點感傷，卻是更大的人生哲學—總有說再見的時候—隨著旅行的最終翻到最後一頁，轉身離去的奇奇好像給予我們力量，從容的面對不過就是如此的離別。

作、繪者：麥當諾（Patrick McDonnell）

 1956年出生於紐澤西，拿獎學金就讀紐約的視覺藝術學院，畢業之後即成為一名自由插畫家，在許多知名雜誌上負責專欄或連載漫畫。1994年9月5日，麥當諾的Mutts連環漫畫首度曝光，作品結合了藝術、幽默、哲理的表達，立刻引起廣大迴響，風靡全球喜愛漫畫的讀者，接二連三獲得許多獎項肯定，包括五度拿下「Harvey Award最佳連載漫畫」（1997.1999.2001.2002.2003）、國際卡通協會所頒發的「年度最佳連環漫畫」（1998）、全美漫畫家協會魯班獎(NCS Reuben Award)的「年度風雲漫畫家」（1999）；一部連載漫畫能夠持續十多年，至今仍不減風采，其受歡迎的程度自然不言而喻！

不只是Mutts的創作漫畫家，麥當諾也是美國人道協會董事會的一員，獻身於動物保育工作，例如：藉由Mutts的「收容所故事」系列，提升大眾對於流浪動物的關注；經常在全國巡迴的簽書活動會上，舉辦認養寵物活動，幫助當地的流浪動物找到溫暖的家。
麥當諾把創作和生活的熱情合而為一，從每個令人會心的作品裡，我們可以看見幽默溫暖的小啟示，更看見人類和動物之間的情誼和關愛。麥當諾不需要到遠處尋找創作靈感，因為他自己最親愛的寵物──小狗厄爾(Earl)和小貓米喵(Meemow)──總是陪伴在他左右；也許就在他的腳邊，也許在他的工作桌上睡覺呢！麥當諾現在和妻子凱倫(Karen)、小狗厄爾、小貓米喵一起住在紐澤西。
